IRC demo gone?

As far as I know, there used be an IRC demo here:

http://browserplus.yahoo.com/demos/irc/

Is the demo gone? Has the service been discontinued?

Best regards,
Torbjörn

    Hello Torbjörn,

We actually had to take the IRCClient service down due to licensing issues. That said, we'd like to write a new IRCClient service from scratch in ruby, or one that uses libraries that are licensed in an acceptable way (old service was using GPL'd code).

Once we get SDKs & documentation up on the site we can start an open source effort somewhere to build a new IRCClient service that has at least feature parity.

Holler if you'd like to participate in this effort, and I'll keep you up to date on it.

Finally, sorry for pulling the service so abruptly.

    very best,
    lloyd

  • Ok, I see. That's a pity. So does it mean that when I upgrade browserplus next time, the service will disappear from my machine (because it seems to be there now)?

Instead of IRC, have you considered supporting Jabber? (Must confess I don't know much about either...so maybe that's not a good suggestion?) Anyway, I made a quick search and there seems to be a couple of open souce jabber libs for ruby. Here's one with a decent license:

    Hey Torbjrn,

I agree. Pretty lame I didn't do my homework at the start and this had to happen. Good news is that we've learned from the experience... Read my lips, no more hostile yanking of services!

Cool reference to Jabber. I see no reason why we shouldn't have both. In-web Adium anyone?
