Parse house number from address

Are there any suggestions from yahoo or other developers on the best way to parse the house number from a street address such as 123 fake st? I have searched for solutions online but it seems non of them are full proof because of the different address layouts.

There is little value in parsing artificial street addresses such as you describe. What would you do with the house number (123) if it doesn't correspond to a real place?

PlaceFinder can be used to parse street addresses, provided they are well-formed and exist in our address dataset. The following address components are returned in the PlaceFinder response: house (house/building number), street (full street name), xstreet (cross street name), unittype (Apt, Suite, etc), unit (apartment/suite number), postal (Zip Code), city (city name), county (county name), state (state/province name), country (country name). Note that county, state, and country may be inferred from the city name and postal code.
