GeoPlanet concordance with GeoNetPT02

Hello,

we at XLDB have produced a concordance between Yahoo's GeoPlanet and our geographic ontology covering the territory of Portugal, Geo-Net-PT02.

Geo-Net-PT02 contains all the administrative divisions of Portugal as well as physical geographic information, such as beaches, rivers, etc.

Concordance was made between administrive features of Portugal and WOEIDs from Yahoo's GeoPlanet. The process of concordance and the validation and results, are described in a technical report, which is available at: http://docs.di.fc.ul.pt/handle/10455/6677

We published the results in a RDF file which is available for download or can also be queried through a : SPARQL endpoint

It's possible, for instance, given the WOEID of the District of Faro, to retrieve all the beaches, and the freguesias were they are located:

SELECT distinct ?freguesiaLabel ?praia WHERE {
?geonet skos:closeMatch <http://where.yahooapis.com/v1/place/2346569> .
?geonet gnpt:hasPart ?concelho .
?concelho gn:type gnpt02:concelho-ATCON .
?concelho gnpt:hasPart ?freguesia .
?freguesia rdfs:label ?freguesiaLabel .
?poi gnpt:isLocatedOn ?freguesia .
?poi gnpt:isLocatedOn ?freguesia .
?poi gn:type gnpt02:praia-PTPRA .
?poi rdfs:label ?praia
} ORDER BY ?freguesia ?praia ASC

Thank you for undertaking the effort to match WOEIDs to Geo-Net-PT place identifiers. I hope the concordance you created encourages GeoPlanet users to make use of your geographic data in Portugal.

It would be interesting to hear your comments about the coverage and quality of GeoPlanet data for Portugal. We are always looking to improve our data so that it better models the world we live in.

  • In the technical report mentioned before, on page 15 and 16 we have the results of the coverage, and detailed information about the differences between the two ontologies regarding the territory of Portugal.
