What is the best way to plan out a web application?

I have an idea for a web based application. I can handle the front-end design and coding, but I will need a web developer to build the back end. What is the best way to present my idea to a web developer so they can understand exactly what I want?

  • At a base level what the back-end developer will need to know are things like:
    - Do you need already have a server set up? If so, what language / database capabilities does the server have?
    - Do you need a database set up to store information? If so, what data would you like to store?
    - What type of information do you need to pass to the back-end? What are the core capabilities you are looking for?

That would be a good starting point.
