Using finance-data on my own webpage?

Hello! I want to show some actual stock- and currency-information on my homepage (doesn't have to be realtime). I found out that yahoo offers such things at download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv. But I could neither find any legal/licensing information nor any documentation for example which parameters I could use.

Could somebody point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot.

  • Hi wuschba,

According to http://developer.yahoo.com/finance/ under "Acceptable Use", the following use policy applies to the finance rss: http://info.yahoo.com/guidelines/us/yahoo/ydn/ydn-3955.html

    Hi Jon,

thanks for your reply and the URL. On this page yahoo says: "Some of our APIs and Web Services are made available only for non-commercial use." but I couldn't figure if the finance-data is such a service or not.

So I looked as well on the FAQ (http://developer.yahoo.com/faq/), but there is only a answer for Some of your services say "non-commercial use only". What does that mean?, but not for WHICH services are non-commercial use only.

So where can I see if the finance rss can be used on commercial sites or not?

  • To my knowledge, this data is not available for commercial use, but I've reached out to the Finance team. I'll update this thread when I have an answer for you (and will update the FAQ to reflect this information).

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

just wondering myself what the story on this is. i am contemplating an iphone application that would need to get market data, including historical data. it seems like there are already some apps that are doing this by drawing on yahoo's csv download. is it okay to do? there really seems to be a big lack of information on this. i have found a few posts here about this topic, and none of them seem answered.

it seems like a really grey area - anyone can access these feeds, i am just going to package a way for users to grab them and interpret them into visual data. and, it seems, yahoo's data is just re-routed information that comes from exchanges and a service called Telekurs. anyway... please answer! thanks!
