Set Up Video Creatives

Use the information on this page when you upload or edit a video creative or ad.

These instructions assume you are on the New Creative or New Ad page. If you need help getting to the New Creative or New Ad page, check out Creatives or Ads.

Configure the Basics

This section explains how to configure a creative’s basic information including the ad format, name, hosting type, and status.

video-creative-basic-information

To configure the basics:

  1. Select the Video button.
  2. From the Ad Format drop-down list, select Video.

For information on native video creatives, check out Set Up Native Video Creatives.

  1. In the Creative Name field, type a name for the video.
  2. Select a hosting option (Hosted or 3rd Party).
  3. Set the status of the creative by moving the Status slider to the Active or Inactive position. A creative must be active in order for it to serve.
  4. To show or hide the AdChoices CLEAR Ad Notice near the ad, do one of the following:
  • Enable AdChoices to display a CLEAR Ad Notice on or near the ad. Clicking the notice generates a new window containing information about the advertiser and privacy pages, and an opt-out link.
  • Disable AdChoices if you want to create your own landing page to inform consumers about privacy practices, profile management, and opt-out options; or skip the CLEAR Ad Notice notification.

For details, check out Ad Choices below.

  1. (For alcohol-related ads only) click in the Creative Category field and select the Alcohol Ad from the drop-down list.
  2. If you want to add your own internal creative ID, click the plus sign to expand the Add Custom ID field. Type the ID in the field.

Note

You can add up to three custom creative IDs and each ID can be up to 30 characters long. You can produce Report Builder reports using the Creative Custom ID dimension.

Click Through URL

(Hosted creatives only) The click through URL is the URL that redirects users to the final landing page. This URL can be a click tracker or regular landing page URL. Specifying a click through URL is required for hosted creatives.

Important

Some SSPs require a declared advertiser domain when they register an ad or respond to an ad request. If the advertiser domain differs from the ad content or landing page, the SSP may assume the ad is fraudulent and block the ad from serving.

clickthrough-url

To set the click-through URL:

  1. Type the click through URL in the Click Through URL field.
  2. Click anywhere on the page, outside the Click Through URL field.

DSP validates the URL and displays a success message or error message. If the URL is validated, DSP fills in the landing page URL automatically.

Note

You can add additional click trackers in the “Additional Tracking URL” field below. These URLs will fire on the click event but will not perform any redirecting.

Landing Page URL

(Third-party creatives only) The landing page URL is the domain that corresponds to the final landing page for your ad. Specifying a landing page URL is optional for third-party creatives, but recommended to avoid being blocked by certain exchanges.

Important

Some SSPs require a declared advertiser domain when they register an ad or respond to an ad request. If the advertiser domain differs from the ad content or landing page, the SSP may assume the ad is fraudulent and block the ad from serving.

edit-landing-page-url

To set the landing page URL:

  1. Type the landing page URL in the Landing Page URL field.
  2. Click anywhere on the page, outside the Landing Page URL field.

DSP checks the URL to make sure it is not a click tracker, and displays a success message or error message. If the URL is validated, DSP fills in the validated landing page URL automatically.

Note

The Landing Page URL field is not mandatory. If you leave this field blank, the DSP Creative Tester fills it in automatically as part of the creative audit.

Additional Tracking URLs

Tracking URLs keep track of the number of impressions served, or the viewership of a video. The viewership measures the number of users who watched a particular percentage of the video (25%, 50%, 75% or 100%).

  1. Type the tracking URL in the Tracking URL field.
  2. Select the tracking URL type from the Type drop-down list.
  • Impression - tracks the number of users who see a video impression.
  • 25% - tracks the number of users who watched 25% of the video.
  • 50% - tracks the number of users who watched 50% of the video.
  • 75% - tracks the number of users who watched 75% of the video.
  • 100% - tracks the number of users who watched 100% of the video.
  1. You can add additional tracking URLs. To add another tracking URL, click the Add Tracking URL link.
  2. Repeat steps 1-3 for each new tracking URL.

Note

To remove a current tracking URL, click the remove icon on the right side.

Upload Creatives

You can upload your creatives using one of the following methods:

Upload a Hosted Video File

For hosted videos, you upload a single video from your local drive or a connnected server.

To upload a hosted video file:

  1. Be sure to select the Hosted button.
  2. Select the Upload tab.
  3. Drag the video file onto the drop zone or click Choose a video to upload, browse to the creative, and click Open.

Upload Hosted Videos by URL

DSP supports HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) video mime types for live-streaming and broadcast supply. You can upload up to 10 video creatives hosted on a content delivery network (CDN) by entering the CDN URLs.

upload-by-url

To upload a hosted video by URL:

  1. Be sure to select the Hosted button.
  2. On the upper-right side of the page, select the By URL tab.
  3. Type the video duration in the Duration field.

Note

You can add up to 10 CDN URLs, but the creatives must all be the same duration.

  1. Enter the first creative URL in the Creative URL field.
  2. For each additional creative URL (up to 10), click the Add URL link, and type or paste each new URL in the Creative URL field.

Upload a Third Party Video

For third-party videos, you enter the creative URL. DSP checks the URL, validates the creative, and provides tools you can use to preview the creative on different devices.

To upload a third-party video:

Type the third-party creative URL in the Creative URL field.

DSP checks that it can reach the URL.

Companion Banners or End Cards

For desktop or mobile web inventory, you can set up companion banners to run alongside your video ads. Companion banners keep your brand messaging at the top of consumers’ minds and extend your brand initiatives outside of a video player without being too interruptive.

For mobile in-app inventory, you can set up end cards. End cards are a version of companion ads that help improve performance for advertisers. An end card is an interactive set of creatives displayed the moment a video ends. End cards work with mobile video ads to engage with target audiences during key moments. For video ads using the Video Ad Serving Template (VAST) standard, end cards are an effective way to reinforce your messaging and drive user interaction. When a user completes a video, end cards allow the user to interact with the ad and easily connect with the advertiser by, for example, booking or buying a product or service; or downloading an app.

Note

Companion banners work with hosted videos that you upload locally or by URL. Companion banners are not supported for third-party videos at this time.

On the New Line or Line Properties page, set up companion banners in the Advanced Options area.

companion-banners-upload

To set up companion banners or end cards:

  1. In the Advanced Options area, click the Yes checkbox for Include companion banner(s)?
  2. Drag the companion banner file onto the drop zone or click Choose File, browse to the file, and click Open.

Note

You can only upload one companion banner file. To upload multiple companion banners, create a zip file of all your banners and upload the one zip file in the Upload Companion Banner(s) area. All of your companion banners attach to the line.

Preview Videos

It is highly recommended that you preview your video creatives. Creative preview mimics the bid response that DSP constructs, and fires all pixels that are attached to the line. Start by looking for the Verified Preview indicator below and to the right of the video. From there, you can preview your creative on different devices and in different formats.

Important

Creative preview cannot replicate all creative issues.

See the following sections for information on previewing a creative:

Preview Across Devices

From the Edit Creative or Edit Ad page, you can preview your video to make sure you are satisfied with it on all the devices you are targeting.

preview-video-creative

To preview a creative across devices:

  1. From the Edit Creative or Edit Ad page, in the Shareable Preview area, click Preview.

The Preview page opens in another browser window.

  1. From the Preview page, click the Desktop, Mobile, and Tablet buttons to check the creative in different formats.
  2. For mobile devices and tablets, move the slider left and right to view the creative in portrait and landscape.
  3. Click the Auto, HTML or Flash button to select a format in which to preview the video. Start the video to test it in that format.
  4. Close the Preview window and return to the Edit Creative or Edit Ad page.

Save Your Video

Save your creative to begin the transcoding process. Do one of the following:

  • If you are finished setting up creatives, click Update Creative or Save Creative. You see the Edit Creative (or Edit Ad) page, where you can continue making adjustments if needed.
  • If you want to set up more creatives, click Save and New. You see the New Creative (or New Ad) page, where you can set up a new creative or ad.

Note

After you save the creative, it may take up to 15 minutes for transcoding to complete. Transcoding is a process that encodes the uploaded video file into multiple video formats and converts the video into an in-stream inline VAST tag. You may need to check back later to preview the creative, after transcoding is complete.

Ad Choices

The AdChoices CLEAR Ad Notice provides consumers with enhanced information and choices about how and when data is collected or used to serve ads targeted to them based on their likely interests. When AdChoices is served on or near ads, consumers can click through to learn more about how Yahoo and other companies collect and use data — including interest-based advertising. Consumers can exercise available choices about whether to continue to allow interest-based ads by the companies involved with an ad.

To help customers who participate in this industry-wide program, Yahoo offers gives consumers the option to enable or disable the CLEAR Ad Notice. DSP customers can provide AdChoices notices for most standard-format IAB ad sizes at no additional cost. Users see the notification in the upper-right corner above the ad.
