Targeting Templates

Use targeting templates to save targeting configurations for later use. Using templates, you can consistently apply many settings across different campaigns under the same advertiser. You can also assign a default template that all new lines under the advertiser inherit.

Note

You can only create and use templates at the advertiser level, not the seat level.

Define targeting templates to easily and consistently specify certain minimums or maximums, or include or exclude specific exchanges or deals on every line. There are two starting points for creating targeting templates:

  • Starting from scratch by selecting the Templates tab for the advertiser.
  • From an existing line, using the targeting attributes previously selected for that line.

What’s Saved in a Targeting Template?

Targeting templates include the full set of attributes that can be configured for a given line:

Set a Default Targeting Template

Once you have defined at least one targeting template, you can set a default template that will be used whenever you create new lines for the advertiser.

  1. Select Advertiser from the left navigation bar.
  2. Select the Templates tab.
  3. Hover over the desired targeting template.
  4. Click the Default button that appears. A message will confirm that the selected template has been saved as the default.
Setting the Default Template

To remove the template as default, click the Default button again.

Note

Users can assign one default template per line type: one for display and one for video. Use the Line Type pulldown at the top of the page to select the line type for the template.

If a default template is assigned for a given line type, the targeting configuration of the default template will be copied to all lines of that line type under the advertiser.

Important

Making changes to the targeting configuration of the default template will not update the targeting configurations of other lines. Only the new lines will inherit the change.

Apply a Targeting Template to an Existing Line

Advertisers can apply a targeting template to an existing line.

  • If no targeting attributes have been set for the line, its attributes will match those in the template.
  • If some targeting attributes have already been defined for the line, the template is additive.

Applying a template to an existing targeting setup will not necessarily replace the original attributes for the line.

  • If more than one targeting selection is allowed for a given attribute (e.g., demographic segments), the attributes in the template are added to the existing targeting for the line. For example, if a targeting template targets Female 35+ is applied to a line that only targets Female 25-34, the new demographic targeting configuration will include both segments.
  • If only one targeting selection is allowed (e.g., choosing either IAS or DoubleVerify for Bot Avoidance, or a value for Viewability threshold), then the value from the template being applied will take precedence.

To apply a targeting template to an existing line:

  1. Select Advertiser from the left navigation bar.

  2. Select the Campaign containing the line.

  3. Select the Line to which you want to apply the template.

  4. Click Copy Settings from a Template. The left side of the panel shows a list of saved templates for the current advertiser available for selection. The right side of the panel shows a shopping cart view of the targeting attributes in the template. Note also that when a user applies a template, both the forecasting chart and data are updated. When a user selects a template, its attributes are applied to the line and the forecasting chart and data are updated.

  5. Click Save to apply the template to the line and save the line.

  1. Select Advertiser from the left navigation bar.
  2. Select the Templates tab.
  3. Click on the Targeting template you want to modify and make your changes.
  4. Click Update Results to refresh the forecasting chart and data.
  5. Click Save to update the template.

Important

  • Saving a targeting template with an existing template name updates the existing template. If you want to save the original template make sure to use a different name when saving.
  • Making changes to a template and saving it does not update the targeting configurations for lines to which the template has been previously applied. Only new lines using that template will reflect those changes.

FAQs

  • Q: Should I create separate templates for display and video?
  • A: Yes. The line targeting configurations are different per line type.

  • Q: Can I use a targeting template that I built for a display line on a video line, and vice versa?
  • A: Yes. The templates for each line type can be applied to both line types. Please note, however, that there may be targeting attributes available in one type but not the other (e.g., Ad Position). In the event that an attribute is not applicable to the line type, it is not used.

  • Q: Does applying a template replace the existing targeting setup?
  • A: No. Applying a template to an existing targeting setup will not necessarily replace the latter. If more than one targeting selection is allowed in a given attribute (i.e. demographic), the setup of these attributes from a template will be added to the existing targeting setup. For example, if a targeting template that targets Female 35+ is applied to the line that only targets Female 25-34, the new demographic targeting configuration will be the result of adding the two: Female 25+. If however, only one targeting selection is allowed (i.e. IAS vs. DoubleVerify for Bot Avoidance or the value of Viewability threshold) then the value from the default template will take precedence.

  • Q: Does the template copy the performance of a line?
  • A: Copying a targeting template does not copy the performance of a line. This is one of the future enhancements planned for this feature.

  • Q: What happens when I edit the template and its name?
  • A: Editing the name of a template does not create a new template. To copy a template, you can select the template in line targeting and make changes, then save as a new template using a different name.

  • Q: What happens when you use the name of an existing template at the time of saving a template in line targeting?
  • A: Be careful. If you use an existing template name to save a new targeting configuration, the existing template with the same name will be updated.
