Yahoo! was out in force at this year's Grace Hopper Celebration, November 9-12 in Portland, OR. GHC is the premier conference for women in computing, run jointly by the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and the Association for Computing Machinery. It's a key arena for bringing corporations, academics and soon-to-be CS grads together for networking, education, career advice and mutual support. This year's GHC had a record attendance of almost 3000 women! We saw many of them at the Yahoo! booth and at our invitation breakfast, and quite a few of them left wearing Yahoo!'s coveted Code Like A Girl shirts and matching purple nail polish! The keynotes were excellent (see links below) and the sessions very informative... and of course the legendary GHC sponsor night dance party was amazing. Can you imagine 3000 women (and a few brave men) rockin' the dance floor until the wee hours? It was so much fun, and a great way to conclude a very informative and productive conference week. Yahoo! was proud to be among the Silver Sponsors for this event, and we look forward to seeing our new women interns and graduates in the coming months.
Finally, appropriate for the holiday season, there are a bunch of goodies in December's Anita Borg Institute ( http://anitaborg.org/) newsletter:
- YouTube link to Sheryl Sandberg's keynote address at Grace Hopper, Day 1
- YouTube link to the GHC Day 2 keynote, given by the Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson
- A new ABI regular column written by Jo Miller, who did an excellent career "branding" workshop at GHC
- An excellent article on how managers can better retain technical women employees
