List app in gallery.

Hi,

Is there a way to list my app somewhere so people can find it from the add content->open apps in my yahoo, like for example mafia wars does?

Thanks.

  • Hi,

thanks for your interest in being in the gallery. Currently we have been working with some partners to feature them in the gallery, however if you put your app url here I'll be happy to pass it on to the My team for evaluation.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Tom,

It would be great if you could do that. Here's my app url http://apps.yahoo.com/-geDzhp6s/YahooFullView/ .

    Thanks :)

I'll go ahead and do that.

  • I passed your URL on and got some feedback. Hopefully these will be some good ideas to consider for your app:

This looks like a really interesting idea. I am still getting some debugging messages though. So maybe a little work on putting on all of the finishing touches.

It would also be great to see some more stuff in the small view to make the application really stand out.

Let me know if I can help you with any of these. It's great to be able to work with you. It looks like you have a host of really interesting social games on your site.

How's the big smoke? I've only been out in California for a few months, so I miss it sometimes.

  • Hi Tom,

Could you please ask where the debugging messages appeared so we can fix them? Also it is a possibility that they tried the app when we were transferring it to a new server. It would be great if you could help with the small view, is there a way to send the guid of the owner to our server and get content without requiring the user to interact first ?

P.S. Sorry but I am not following the big smoke reference, care to enlighten me ?

    Thanks :)

I'll see what I can find out about the debugging messages. In regards to the small view I think users have to interact in order to get any specific information. You can also change someone who added the app's view to be more interactive. Why not add buttons that allow them to click directly into parts of the game?

You could also updating the generic small view regularly too. For example you could list the number of people who are currently playing every hour, or feature some parts of the gameplay.

  • Hi Tom,

I think we found the errors and we fixed them. We will be updating the small view sometime this week to be more interactive as you suggested.

P.S. That's correct we are in London, though I did not know of the big smoke reference. As always cloudy and about to rain, nothing changes as far as the weather goes. :)I used to live in London, which some people call the big smoke. I saw London on the web site for Kramaley Games.

  • Hi Kramaley,

Your app got passed around to a few different groups and I'm told that it has now been pushed to the my.yahoo.com gallery. There were a few suggestions that were made if you wouldn't mind addressing them:

    - It appears that you are not handling utf-8 characters. One user reported that their name does not show up correctly in the full page view
    - A "would like to have" item that was suggested was if you could show the top players in the full page view

The app looks good though, great work.

Hi there, Any reasons why you request the Contact scope in your app? The contact scope is spomewhat sensitive for our users and we will in the future highlight that scope so users understand the sensitivite of the data related the contact scope. If you dont need that data I would encourage you to remove the scope. Thanks!

    Hi,

I was not sure how invites were going to work when I created the app and thought that contacts might be a way. I have removed the need for access to Yahoo! contacts.
    Thanks for noticing.

    Hi Jon,

I send a header from the server side language (php) to set the encoding to UTF-8 as I cannot do it using meta tags because they are not allowed by CAJA. Any suggestions on that? There is a top players list in the game on the link Cities, if you meant something else please let me know.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

  • Sorry for the slow reply, I'll follow up with ¿R€ivax? who reported the issue and see if he can give you an exact location on where the issue is occurring. A good starting point in the meantime would be to try creating a test account with his name characters "¿R€ivax?" and see if everything displays correctly. If there is an area that doesn't if you wouldn't mind posting the code you're using the handle that output we can help set up a code base that will output the full character set.

  • I thought yml:name might be rendering characters incorrectly, but everything seems to render correctly. There was just a platform push yesterday so maybe there was a bug that was fixed. If you're not seeing an issue with name characters then that may be what has happened...it's just something to keep an eye on.

    Thanks

    Hi Jon,

I just noticed a lot of things have broken. For example I cant get the name anymore the way I was doing it until now. Is there anywhere I can check for what changes were made and how to migrate to the new version of the platform ?

  • More information - I heard back that the application was never displayed in the My Yahoo! "add content" gallery section. It appears that the application may have been on another discovery engine (perhaps the http://apps.yahoo.com/myapps "featured applications" page)...I'll send a message through to another team to see if they have any further insight.

  • Alright I've heard more. Your application was added as a featured application on http://apps.yahoo.com/myapps. Applications here are cycled through in order to display new applications, so what happened is that your application has been cycled out of the featured spot so that other applications could be added to the featured list.

  • The applications are all sent to the application platform folks and they keep a list of the applications to cycle them through the display mode on http://apps.yahoo.com/myapps depending on the push that we are making for the types of applications...current it's productivity applications. Your application is in the list but until we have a formal gallery the applications get cycled.

  • Please see my last message from this post for specifics on this process. Your application has been sent through to the engineers on the stack and I have followed up with several e-mails.

Since your application is still live users can install it. What you should do is seed it among a few people, push updates to the update stream, and users will install your application from that and a friend share process. That is the best method to increase your application installs.

  • Hi Truthfortrust,

Good job with the application, it looks quite clean. I have a few suggestions for it before sending along to our BD folks:
    - When I updated content from the application (description for friends) the small view didn't update with relevant content. While the user updates their content it should be reflected on the small view
    - The small view itself doesn't have too much information or visual aspects. There is also not a link back to your canvas view. Since the small view is the aspect that users will see on My Yahoo! this content needs to be quite rich.
    - When I updated content from the canvas view I did not see a vitality event on my update stream. You should try to push out updates to the stream as that is what users will see and will promote installation for your application.
    - Since your application requires some of your friends to install the application, you should add an easy invite option to #3 "Meet Friends of Friends". This will allow people to invite others. You should also provide some sort of alternate content for people without friends (or who have friends that don't sign up) to make the application usable right off the bat.

Those are some initial suggestions on the app that the BD folks would probably send back as well. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • Hi John,

I've forwarded on your request for consideration to the My Yahoo! gallery. Since there are only a few applications that cycle through My Yahoo!, you may want to explore the alternate approach to add followers. Once your application is in a "live" state, it can be added and used by anyone - you don't have to wait for the gallery. I would suggest pushing out event messages to the update stream and seeding the application with connections you have. That's probably the best method for application growth.

  • Hello Jon,

I think it works now. For some reason, the REST API does not like the empty "realm" argument (which appears when building the header for a SetSmallView request), so I had to modify the "to_header" function in my Python oauth library. Before, this was not a problem, but something must have changed with the latest SmallView update. Let me know if it works fine for you too.

Also, I have a couple of questions:
    1) What is the correct syntax for yml:include? I cannot find it anywhere.
    2) Is there any way to know if a user add or remove an app (via a callback url for exemple)?

    Thanks a lot,

    John

  • Thanks for the rapid reply Jonathan.

I have made the recommended modifications to the open application, http://apps.yahoo.com/-LL9ac14u, and wish to submit it for review consideration into the Yahoo Gallery listed under travel if possible.

    1) Removed the unnecessary request for for the user permissions.
    2) Utilized the allotted space more fully in both views.
    3) Made the Full view slightly more interactive locally, without jumping to the hosted server.

    Thank you for your consideration.

  • Hi nal1012222,

The new changes have added a nice visual improvement on the application, but there is still one issue with the functionality. No matter what you search for within the application, all the system will do is forward the search query to your site. Fully featured applications on YAP need to have functionality on the application besides just linking off to the parent site. When a user searches on your application search results should be provided within the application itself. We're not saying that you can't link off to your site for added functionality, but currently anything you do within the application bumps you off of the application. This will need to be updated before I can pass it along for consideration within the live gallery state.

    - Jon
