hi,
I managed to create my own app in PHP going through hoops to get by the OAuth the way Yahoo implemented it.
One suggestion is to look at Netflix API documentation for OAuth which is very clear and they provide forms for queries too.
Anyway,
finally my app works the way I want, yet the main reason I created this app was to get hold of the projected points and I recently found out that they are not available!!!!!!
MAKE CLEARER WHAT'S AVAILABLE AND WHAT IS NOT!!!
MAKE A CLEARER DOCUMENTATION FOR OAUTH!!!
MAKE MORE EXAMPLES AVAILABLE TO COVER MORE CASES!!
and finally I'm abandoning YAPI anyway..

a disappointed developer.

Hi,

I think the Delicious OAuth API is clear in that it follows the
spec and provides examples along the way.

URL encoding the request parameters is just a simple way of
saying parameter encoding in section 5.1 of the OAuth spec
http://oauth.net/core/1.0a/#encoding_parameters

Section 9.1.1 says another round of parameter encoding is needed:
http://oauth.net/core/1.0a/#anchor13

So it is indeed that URL encoding needs to be done twice.

Thanks,
Yu Wang
Yahoo!
Posted by Alex Rozanski

For the API example for using OAuth with Delicious (http://delicious.com/help/oauthapi), I feel that part of it which is slightly misleading could be improved.

With step #5 (Building the "Base String") it explains how to sort the request parameters and concatenate them with ampersands in the format:

<param1>=<value1>&<param2>&...&<paramn>=<valuen>

and then how to put this request parameters string into the base string.

However, both steps state that values should be URL encoded:
1) When building the request parameters string, concatenating them with ampersands, it says "Note: each <value> must be url encoded."
2) When building the full base string, it says "Note: the <api url> and the <request parameters> must be url encoded."

This is misleading, because it suggests that the values for the parameters in the request parameters string (eg the value for oauth_consumer_key) should be URL encoded first, then concatenated with ampersands, and then this entire string be URL encoded again, which will result in an invalid signature (which left me stumped for a considerable amount of time).

Perhaps this could be cleared up in the example, perhaps suggesting that the full request parameters string is built up first, then the whole thing is URL encoded, or just by concatenating the parameters with %26 instead of &.</request></api></value></valuen></paramn></param2></value1></param1>

I'm going to add this to my list of bugs to be filed on the system (first running tests to confirm and build potential workarounds).
Posted by Jared

Great, thanks for looking into this.

In addressing this issue, I think it's important not to impose stricter limitations on ajax requests than browsers naturally have. That would be crippling the Y!OS platform. In particular:
1) It's okay for a page to have multiple outstanding requests.
2) It's okay for ajax calls to complete and to update the page out of order.

What I'm suggesting in this thread is quite narrow. It's only when multiple and/or ajax calls are targeting the same element that there's a problem worth addressing.

Example 1
Suppose we have three links:
A
B
C
If someone clicks all three quickly in the ordering (a, b, c), then it would be acceptable for the person to see the content displayed inside the "foo" element in any of these orderings, depending on which order the responses arrive:
(a,b,c)
(a,c)
(b,c)

but not in any ordering where b precedes a or c precedes a or b.

Example 2
Suppose we have a form:
<form ... replace="bar">

If someone submits the form three times with the text input containing "A", "B", and "C", in that order, then it would be acceptable to see the responses displayed in the same orderings that were acceptable in the first example, but unacceptable for the results of any submission to be displayed and then replaced by the result of an earlier submission. The same constraints should apply if there were multiple elements all targeting the same destination element ID.

Let me reemphasize that, in my opinion, these proposed ordering constraints should not apply globally across all and elements, since that would amount to crippling the platform (e.g. canceling legitimate requests or introducing artificial latency).

Let me take a look into this and prepare some samples for the teams to showcase this issue. Since the yml tags are self contained Yahoo! widgets they should be controlling the ajax processing stack. If we create a simple priority stack of 1 request we should be able to force out old requests before they complete.

Looking deeper.
Jon

Good workaround - we've had to do similar things in our app development to bypass some of the platform issues. Unfortunately the bug tracker is not public - there have been talks about having a public bug tracker but not final decision on that has been made yet - for now we troll the forums for new bugs and issues.

I've just noticed that multiple submissions of an insert or replace results in a free-for-all. If the responses arrive out of order, the result of the first submission can overwrite the result of the last submission, for example.

The fix I'd suggest is discarding the results of a form submission instead of inserting them into the DOM if the results of a later form submission have already been inserted into (or replaced) the same target element.

is probably also affected.

Sure. Thanks for the prompt feedback. Just curious -- is the Y!OS bug database public?

For the benefit of others, yhe workaround I've decided upon is including the second form in the original page -- hidden initially, then shown when the first form is submitted. The relevant section of my code that implements this is here:

Thanks for the alternate sample, I was able to duplicate the issue that you were seeing and have filed it as a defect bug (bug #2691807 for your reference). This probably won't roll out in the next platform upgrade but may make it in a future revision.

- Jon

No worries - hopefully we can get some resolution for this. I've seen this type of problem before (but with yml:a). Let me set up a use case for this and file a bug. I know you're under some tight deadlines for your application so I don't want to set your expectations too high - this more than likely will not be an available fix within your app creation timeframe.

I'll post back with bug details once everything has been set up.

- Jon

Hi realmondofilms,

Thank you for your suggestions. That sounds like something that would be a great application for the Yahoo! Application Platform (YAP). Once developer applications start rolling into the application gallery you should start seeing applications like that and, if not, a developer may see this suggestion and create the application themselves. Keep checking out the Yahoo! developer site for information on when more developer applications are launching.

Jonathan LeBlanc
Senior Software Engineer
Yahoo!
