pattern suggestion: neighborhood action?

Hi all,

I was playing around with this idea for a pattern in my head for a couple of days now, so I thought : ask the experts.

In many social networks there is a feature that displays the recent actions of my contacts/friends. Best-known examples might be friendfeed, facebook's news, linkedin, xing, etc.

This seems to me as a pattern for the purpose of keeping the level ambient intimacy high enough. Keep users informed and direct them towards the side to act.

It may come in two variants and some flavours: an incoming pattern (agregate all contact actions on one platform), an outgoing (aggregate all my actions, (like soup.io).
Flavours can ba a container on the side, an rss to re-aggregate in for example pageflakes or google ig, even a daily digest via e-mail is possible.

Do you think, this has potential for a pattern and what should I do to validate it, once is written down?

Greetings,
Carsten

  • Hello all,

ok, maybe I used the wrong words or I was unclear... ?

what do I have to deliver for a common ground for discussion?

No, I think you're on the right track. Somehow your original post escaped me. Sorry about that. We are working on pattern along the lines of what you discuss, both specific to Yahoo's approach (we call them Updates) as well as more generally.

I think your initial approach, thinking in terms of aggregating incoming vs. outgoing updates is a good way to look at things.
