Comparing Yahoo! UI Design Patterns with others and reasons for using them

Dear all,

I've used Yahoo! UI design patterns in a complex application that we are developing. The task was sucessful. In transition prcess to the client, they have asked me to compare the design patterns that I've used with other existing UI design patterns and also they have asked me to specify justify them why I've used these patterns. Another question from client side is the standard that have been used to develop the existing UI patterns. could you please help me in providing the answers?

Best wishes

First of all, I'd love to hear more about the project, if you're free to discuss your design work on it. In particular, it would be neat to hear which patterns you found useful and how you applied them to your specific design challenges.

As far as comparing to other pattern libraries, the best list I am aware of is the one we've compiled for the social patterns book project, but that's just a list, not a detailed comparison among the resources (that you'd need to do for your self, though we'd welcome any critical feedback you might come up with).

For justifying the use of Yahoo! patterns in your project, I'd probably say that our collection is thoroughly reviewed and vetted by Yahoo!'s top designers and reflects experience won on very demanding scale. If a UI pattern is problematic or leads to undesirable consequences, we've probably discovered that merely from the fact that our interfaces are used by millions of people daily.

In addition, I'd make clear that the patterns are not cookie-cutter recipies but rather collections of insight gained from experience and analysis and that you use them to solve new problems, not to simply piece together generic UI elements.

Perhaps in the future we will build a list of practitioners and agencies and companies that have made use of our patterns, but right now we don't have such a resource available.

As to the standards, Yahoo! design patterns are drawn from our experience with product design and from our research and testing. We don't publish them until they have been thoroughly reviewed, revised, and rated.

(In the future we may publish "beta" patterns, but if so they will be clearly marked as such.)

    I hope this helps!
