Installer doesn't work on Windows XP

Hi There-

I'm eager to integrate BrowserPlus capabilities into my website but it doesn't work in Windows.

I went to the photodrop demo application (http://browserplus.yahoo.com/demos/photodrop/) in IE7 on XP SP2. It detected properly that I didn't have BrowserPlus installed and prompts me to download. I click run to run the installer and go through the installer dialog. It starts the installer and eventually gives me a Runtime Error (at 29:47): List index out of bounds.

We've seen this error and an error registering a DLL on different XP machines with/without SP2.

  • By the way...
Installer version is 2.1.7 and MD5 checksum is b8a8a40af9ff6b984a87ec7d14c6ef63

well this has me stumped. it's the first report I've heard of a problem with running the installer. The checksum is indeed correct.

I'll ask around tomorrow for ideas and let you know if anything comes up.

Have you been able to run the installer correctly on any machine? I wonder what is interesting/different on the machines that are failing...

Have you ever installed browserplus in the past on these machines?

  • Wow, I'm glad I posted because I really figured you guys must have been working on the issue. When this thing works it seems to work really well and we're eager to integrate it into our site (top 15k in Alexa).

My team tried the installer on 5 different Windows installations and came up with two distinct errors:

The List Index out of bounds error that I mentioned occurs on two different instances of Windows XP SP2 running in VirtualBox environments. One VirtualBox installation is on Ubuntu 8.10 and the other is on OS X Leopard.

The other error that we are seeing is on native Windows XP machines that have not had service pack 2 applied. On those machines, the error I see is:
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Plugins\YBPAddon_2.1.7.dll
Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway or Abort to cancel.
I tried clicking ignore and rebooting but it didn't help.

I did see the installer succeed on Windows XP SP3 but only when I went to the browserplus photo uploader demo page using Firefox instead of IE. When I tried with IE7 on that computer, I got a javascript error:
    Line 2
    Char 3880
    Invalid Argument
    Code 0

I'm happy to provide more info on these issues. Feel free to ping me on Yahoo IM with the same handle as I'm posting here with.

Thank you for the detailed information, Marc,

So combining this information into a couple concrete problem descriptions:
    1. Win32 installer not running under virtualbox ("list index out of bound error generated by installer")
    2. DLL registration error for YBPAddon.dll on xp machines < sp2
    3. javascript error on photodrop demo under xp sp3 IE7

for #1, we'll get a VirtualBox environment set up to reproduce. (we use both parallels and vmware extensively, but haven't tested under virtualbox)

for #2, we'll build a non sp2 xp image to check it out. I wonder if in this environment browsers other than IE were working?

for #3, I'll try to reproduce today. Preemptively, at what point in working with the demo does the JS error occur? is it at load or after you take a specific set of steps?

Again, thanks for the reports, they'll all get in our bug tracking system and we'll squash em.

    very best,
    lloyd

  • As a side note, is there any way on this forum to subscribe to a thread via email?

For #2, it's an OS issue, not a browser issue. The error does show that it's having an issue registering a resource for the IE plugin, but I think we'd have to somehow uninstall IE to see if the install concludes otherwise. I can't really do that right now as we use those machines for testing. I say it's an OS issue b/c it's the installer executable that's having the issue, not something running in the browser.

I did try closing IE before running the installer but that didn't seem to help.

For #3, Firefox worked on the SP3 machine, just not IE7

Thanks for your attention to these issues.

  • Hey Marc,

Geeze we really need email updates for this forum. Sorry for the delay.

We've got a bug opened for pre sp2 xp support, and will try to take a look in the coming weeks. I'll update this thread with progress.

again, sorry to make you wait for a response,

Agreed. For know you can use a service that pushes RSS to email, like RSS FWD (http://www.rssfwd.com/), but you can only sub to the entire board, not just a thread.

We *are* working on email support. :)Community Manager, YDN

  • hey marc,

good news, we have a fix for the installer problem. It's actually on xp machines where firefox is not installed (yikes). We'll push a fix later this week, and integrate this into our testing flow to prevent future regressions.

    very best,
    lloyd
