yes, but you'd need to author a service to do so. The whole point of the IRC demo was to make the point that native client originated communications are possible.
What protocol are you interested in? or is it a custom protocol over tcp? Love to hear more about your application, we could think up a generic service to allow efficient, lightweight, bi-directional messaging from javascript. Good to base it on a standard.
