I spoke with some of the engineers on the front page team to try to provide you with an appropriate answer to this question. While it's true that YSlow does not recommend the use of AlphaImageLoader, in the case of the front page team certain requirements needed the use of it. These are used as sparingly as possible so that the page score does not degrade too much.
