New Yahoo Email: Unexpected Navigation via Back Button

Ed15 Sep 2011 9:06 AM

Sequence
1. Login to email account
2. Access inbox
3. Select an unread email, transitions to new page.
4. Press browser 'Back' arrow to return to inbox.

Instead of the inbox, I'm redirected to the login screen.

It's hard to believe that Yahoo developers didn't encounter this during testing. They should realize that this navigation is counterintuitive, and can be downright aggravating, since most people rely on the back arrow as second nature.

I feel your pain. Best Yahoo mail my ass. I encountered this major issue during the Beta and was able to revert back to old mail, and I vowed never to switch to the new mail. However now Yahoo forces people to "upgrade" their perfectly fine email interface and those who are smart enough not to do so can't even access their email accounts anymore. Absolutely trash.

QUOTE(Ed @ 15 Sep 2011 9:06 AM)

Sequence
1. Agreed. This is terrible. I see absolutely no benefit to the new Yahoo mail. Major features listed include better spam filtering (happens on the back end, nothing to do with a client), no download (duh, this isn't a feature, it's how web-based applications like webmail work) and tabs that do nothing but get in my way when too many are open or I try to delete a draft.

All of that I could live with, but I have been using the back button for years and it is terribly annoying to have to stop and think if I am in an application where the back button doesn't work as it does in every other program.

I can only assume the new interface takes less processing power for Yahoo. I see absolutely no benefit in the new design to the end user.

It's lousy. I just saved a mail to draft and had nothing but problems while editing. It's terrible at changing fonts, and won't let me go down a few lines using enter without viewing problems. It is a battle to use and not worth the problems, and I still can't get to my bookmarks. I'm sick and tired of being a guinea pig for corporations who have nothing better to do than tinker with things that aren't broken so they can make more money with advertising, driving our costs up for everything.

QUOTE(Purrfect @ 29 Sep 2011 4:57 AM)
Agreed. I use Gmail primarily. I don't know if it's because of habits I have there but two problems I have every time I use the new Yahoo Mail:

1. I press Backspace (which goes back a page in the browser history) to go back after reading a message. Since the new Yahoo Mail puts mail in a new tab in their own interface, it isn't in browser history, and thus I end up going back to the Sign In page. Terrible design flaw.

2. I go to send a message and I click the big "Compose Message" button instead of "Send". I don't know why I do that but it's what I do. Every time. It's annoying.

One more voice. Yahoo pinheads.... often when many of us read our mail, we use the Back button prevalent on many mice to go back to the inbox. I can click it immediately without worrying where my cursor is. I've been dealing with this for a while, assuming that this is irritating enough to a decent number of people, that you would fix it. But you haven't, and for me it's just been impossible to get used to this particular quirk of interface design when every other mail program still acknowledges the back button implies you want to go back to your inbox, not the freaking login screen.

Had already started migrating to gmail since I got an android phone. This just accelerated that move. Congrats. See ya.

If instead of reading even 1 single attempt of a response for a resolution on the Yahoo Developer Network forum in the past 4 months, there must be greater factors at work. Perhaps the executives have given orders to drive users away from yahoo for the purpose of stock manipulation(Sometimes a few shareholders need/want to buy massive quantities of shares, but want to push the share price down a little first)

I dont see any other logical reason how a company with 14,000 employees, generating billions of dollars in revenue/sales per year can let such a major problem go unrepaired. I'm so glad to see there are others who find this intolerable. Just had to add my twopenneth. I keep about 100 emails for reference and periodically delete odd ones at or near the end after reading them for the final time. I cannot accept that after deleting one I have to go back in and re-locate the next one I want to check for deletion. I was a commercial computer programmer for 30 years and I think every chairman I ever worked for would have sacked me for incompetence if I had failed to correct something as fundamental as this within within a few hours.

Yes, there is a need for the back button. I just got back from vacation and have to go back two weeks to read my mail. Well, I go back two weeks, read an email, then hit back to go back to the day I was on. But what happens? I'm sent to the log-in screen.

This is like if Ford put out a car that didn't have reverse. It's absurd. I'm not sure how Yahoo is going to survive this. It's been going on for like a year now with no fix. How is this possible? How could a company with their resources not have fixed this within the week? It's mind boggling. What would happen at Ford if a car was released without reverse?

QUOTE(Grarnigh @ 8 Dec 2011 4:02 PM)

QUOTE(Ed @ 15 Sep 2011 9:06 AM)

Sequence
1. View as in a Scrolling List. It opens the mail in the same window, so there is no need for the back button. It's like using using an old email software. It's really gay though. And it might turn you gay.

Here's how you switch back to classic:

wtf?

Oh great, this yahoo blog doesn't allow links--gee, a developer blog that doesn't allow links... hmmm, I'm sensing a pattern here.

Well, there is a link out there to switch to classic. You'll have to find it yourself.

This is the only fix for this I have found, but it does solve the problem. Wish I had found this fix a year ago.

Astonishing that yahoo has not solved this. Do they somehow think it's not a problem?

It makes me wonder if their developers actually use their own web mail product. They should be forced to as a requirement of employment. That would have solved this a year ago.

I tried to send a message to Yahoo on its Feedback page because of this issue. Spelled it out in a long message detailing my frustrations. Hit Send and got a message that the Feedback page page was "unavailable" but that I should try again because "Your message is important to us." Really? Then why doesn't the Feedback feature work? And why has this infuriating Back button issue been allowed to fester for so long?
I suggest that everyone who is frustrated by this issue spring for a stamp and send a letter to Yahoo's relatively new CEO Scott Thompson. The address is:
701 First Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94089

Snail mail is far more likely to get attention than e-mail these days--and it can't be blocked.

Yep the worse change in the history of Yahoo. Now it's even impossible to switch back to Classic

YAHOO PLEASE FIX THIS !

Agreed. Fix the back button, Yahoo!
Jeff6 Mar 2012 3:32 PM
Oh, and Yahoo, for every one of us that was irritated enough to search the problem so we could b***h about it, there are at least 1,000 other irritated users who remained silent, but are looking at other email services.

The real question is obvious. If the new Yahoo mail was entirely benign and beneficial, would thy not simply convert everyone automattically? Since they require user permission, there must be consequences that not every user will be happy with. I am doing everything I can to continue with the classic format, but my patience is wearing thin. Gmail may be my best option as I have hears of problems with Hotmail. I welcome comments from others. Cheers

Hey Yahoo, do you wonder why this topic has more replies than any other in the suggestion box right now???

Please consider fixing this back button issue. It will generate a lot of customer satisfaction.
Barbara20 Mar 2012 10:54 AM
Yup, same thing still happening; just did it to me again over past few days. And I thought for awhile there was a workaround on the page, but I can no longer find it. Am I missing something? If not, I think it's time to start migrating away from my Yahoo account. I even told a relative who works at Yahoo about it, hoping he could kick it up the chain...but nothing. Arghhh!
Kendrik22 Mar 2012 5:06 PM
Does anyone know if the developers ever respond to these suggestion pages, or is this all just being ignored? It's hard to tell if they even realize that this is an issue.

Yahoo is only EMail browser where the "Back" browser doesn't work. I've tried "getting used to it" over past year and still just now I clicked "Back".

I am switching over to GMail. Yahoo Mail sucks.

It's just f**king annoying, just unbelievable.

A company like yahoo that are behind google should be trying much harder. When you're second or third best, that's what you have to do. Yahoo in general (not just the mail) always looks so budget, it's amazing anyone uses it.
Norman15 Apr 2012 11:02 PM
At the very least, they could put a "back to inbox" button at the bottom of emails so one doesn't have to scroll back up to the inbox button. Fairly disgusting that they don't even respond with some kind of an explanation to this page of complaints. Just another heartless corporation now, I guess. Too big to fail, etc.

Intuitive clicking of back button takes you back to login and not back to mail inbox. Extremely frustrating and difficult to "unlearn." No one had the user in mind.

Extremely difficult to edit e-mail text. Cursor does not stay in place and you have to repeat action to get the cursor in the correct place to add or delete text.

at yahoo we make every effort to make life as difficult as possible there must be flaws for people to bitch about you no need back button to go back to your previous page why would we make things easy for you all at yahoo we forced everyone to upgrade to our awsome new email which is better because we eliminated the use of the back button

QUOTE(Ed @ 15 Sep 2011 9:06 AM)

Sequence
1. In the desperate hope Yahoo actually sees this page as some kind of request, my god - I *hate* the behavior of the back button in yahoo mail, to the extent that it has been relegated almost entirely to a spam account for me.

Please fix it!!!
jg16 May 2012 12:24 PM
I just wanted to say I hate this, and have cursed several times at it, and I'm glad to see others hate it too!!!

YAHOO FIX THIS PROBLEM OR I'M SWITCHING.

P.s. I been using yahoo mail for the last 10 years.
Len Feehan23 May 2012 4:11 AM
This is a schoolboy error in basic system design,
-'dont break the damn back button'.

I've used yahoo mail since 2001, this is sufficiently annoying to send me to gmail, its even worth the effort of changing all my account logins and contacts so i never need to use yahoo again.
Super job.
