While analyzing the geographic scope for the towns in Russia I found that the southwest and northeast point is same for different towns, though their centroid is correct. Please look into the issue.

Do you know how/if we can check:
- live status of Placemaker web services?
- number of API calls made by a certain appid?
(I downloaded CSV under http://developer.apps.yahoo.com/projects/ but it returned empty).

Hi,

Anyone else is seeing a lot of Yahoo Placemaker (and Geoplanet) requests (via curl) hitting a variety of errors:
- connect() timed out!
- Empty reply from server
- Failure when receiving data from the peer

This API has been working for me for months and suddenly became unreliable this morning. Was the server down? Where can I check API status?

I did make a lot of API calls to Yahoo Placemaker in the last 24 hours, so I'm wondering if that may have caused it. If that's the case, how can I resolve it?

My own tracking shows I'm way below the daily limit, but how can I check that limit in my Yahoo developer account?

Recently I've started to see an error from the PlaceMaker API stating:

column placemaker_woedetail.centroid does not exist

Has the API changed? This code was working fine before. And now fails on the following query:

y.execute('select woeid, name, boundingBox, centroid from geo.places where woeid in (%s)' % woeids)

This seems to have started late last week. Anyone knows why this is happening?

I'm using Yahoo Top Stories as the RSS input and using documentURL to point to the content. The docs for outputType=rss imply that the actual RSS input is returned with additional elements under each rss/channel/item element for any places found.

When I run this:

Could you please shed some light as to whether other Yahoo Location APIs are suitable for such cases, i.e. cases with short document size (2-4 words) where Placemaker is more likely to assign lower weight on a location that the minimum threshold?
e.g. Yahoo PlaceFinder or Yahoo GeoPlanet

Hello

I am using the placemaker API to geocode text written in Spanish extracted from PDFs.

When I point the the placemaker at this file:

http://people.rit.edu/bmtski/mc/processed_...mplate_test.txt

it is geocoding some of the places but not all of them.

For example, it will geocode Escuintla, Santa Rosa and Guatemala but is missing the others.

I thought perhaps the others places were missing from the yahoo database perhaps, but it sometimes will geocode, for example, Quetzaltenango

Do the Spanish characters have anything to do with this situation? Or having spaces/breaks in the file?

Any advice on what is causing certain places to be missed would be appreciated.

When I input a place name, why the response is null ? But I use HttpAnalyzerStdV6 monitor show that raw Stream is right.

I've been working with Placemaker for a while and find it an awesome service.

However, I realized that it fails to determine places with simple changes of short texts:

"Yosemite 09" -> returns Yosemite as expected
BUT,
"Yosemite June 09" -> returns nothing!
or,
"Vietnam War" -> returns Vietnam as expected
BUT,
"Vietnam Part II" -> returns nothing!

etc,etc.

You'd expect it to at least return the earlier suggestions, albeit with a lower weight and/or confidence.
But instead, these simple additions are tripping the service entirely.

I have set the confidence level to 0 to make sure it returns every possibility (although it seems that's the default).

Is there a recommended set of characters/expressions that we ought to filter out of documentContent beforehand?

The same for the town "Tibro", even when I lower the confidence parameter.

Other places in Sweden, like Kalix, is correctly recognized even without adding county or country name as a suffix.

Is there a way to specify that I want to search within a certain geographical area to get hits also for places like "Brunflo" and "Tibro"?

thanks for your help. However it still does not work :-(

I tried 2 different things now:

1) registering a new application - however i did not get to any point where i could choose "generic" for an autehntication method. I was able to complete the first step, but the second step was always that one here: "https://developer.apps.yahoo.com/dashboard/verifyDomain.html" It says "create an empty file" and put it in root dir of the server, i did that, but authentication failed. then i copyied the text of the file name to the file itself (http://www.flirtalike.com/otGVnepBZBoCQ2eMNg6gbg--.html), but it still fails - it always says

"Domain Verification Failed

We had trouble fetching the file from your server. Please make sure it's accessible. You might want to monitor your access logs to make sure our request is making it there."

2) I tried to verify the domain from the sidebar of https://developer.apps.yahoo.com/projects like you suggested - but that caused the same problem, no matter if the file was empty or not.

I don't know, maybe i am heading in the complete wrong direction? The general thing i want to do is to use the placemaker API for our mobile website to translate ZIP codes to geocodes on a regular base (like max 1000 requests per day, most of the times it will be like 300-500). We do not need to access any private user data from yahoo users. The usecase goes as follows:

1) users sing up for a free account on flirtalike.com (new credentials, no oauth at the moment)
2) they put their zip code in their profile
3) an internal process on our server shall be started after the zip code has been entered by the user and translate that zip code to geo data and save it in our DB

thats all for the moment. Lateron we plan to implement more stuff like oauth, etc...

Could you try to find the right way for me to implement the desired fucntionality?
