After an interesting talk by Christian Heilmann on using YQL, I decided to experiment with the Placemaker and RSS aspect of it to parse out locations from one of my favourite websites, Shorpy.com.
Shorpy is a site run by Kenneth Booth that simply shows high-resolution scans of photographs from the American National Archive. I've always enjoyed reading it but, since my sense of American geography is nonexistent, I've never had the ability to place of the photos across the country. However, since it features a fairly predictable description format for each photograph, I was able to easily parse out the descriptive location text most of the time and, using the Placemaker query, to return a set of lat/lon co-ordinates. I then mapped these.

Hi all,

Please have some fun playing with a PhotoMaker - mashup, which geoparses the text and finds appropriate photographs to illustrate it. It uses PlaceMaker to geoparse the text and get WOEIDs and coordinates, Flickr to extract photographs from and YQL to glue it all together.

* News Map - taking the Yahoo RSS news feed and Placemaker to find locations
