at http://openid.yahoo.com/.

Can you please also send us the different OpenID URLs that belong
to the same user so we can check?

Yeah, okay, I asked the user and he even did use different Yahoo-logins, sorry.

But it still seems to be broken - yahoo.com is still not working as OpenID and the https://me.yahoo.com/ is resulting in the JanRain PHP library giving me the "Authentication failed: Server denied check_authentication" error. Any idea what the problem might be there?

You can do OpenID discovery through yahoo.com or me.yahoo.com which
returns location to the XRDS document that specifies Yahoo!'s
OpenID auth endpoint:
https://open.login.yahooapis.com/openid/op/auth

Then all your actual OpenID requests should be sent to that endpoint.
Neither yahoo.com nor me.yahoo.com handles OpenID authentication requests.

works with common OpenID modules.
