Need for a contact to clarify non-technical questions

Jeremy,

In the company I work for we have started learning the WDK with the idea to develop widgets in the scope of our core business.
My management has questions to make relative to the business model of Yahoo! Connected TV. That means non-technical things.

Who should we address this questions to? Could you facilitate us an email contact?

My email address is francesc.sala@atosorigin.com

Thanks in advance.

    Thank you Jeremy.

In fact I already emailed to that address on December 22nd. And had an automatically generated reference id back (which by the way I do not know how I am supposed to use).
I guess everybody there must be busy with the CES.
I can wait, because I am not in a hurry right now. Maybe after a prudential time period, if did not receive answer I could just post my questions in here.

    Thanks a lot again.
    Kind regards,
    f

  • Hello Francesc, at CES we announced public availability of the WDK, including all the documentation. Please see http://developer.yahoo.com/connectedtv/ and check if that has the information you are looking for. If not, let us know and we can follow up from there.

  • Hello rj.

What I need to find out is not on that web. Just let me post my questions in here:

Before mounting a development team and equipping it with TV sets, my management needs to get a clearer understanding of:

    1. Which is the business model? I mean how the companies developing widgets for the Yahoo! connevted TV platform will make a profit out of it. Will it be by paid downloads? By including publicity in the widgets? By other means? How does it works exactly? And what is the role of Yahoo! in it.

    2. As we understand any widget needs to be submitted to the approval of Yahoo! before going into production. Does it also need the approval of the TV manufacturers (Samsung, LG, Sony,Vizio)?

    3. The document "Yahoo! Connected TV - TV Widget Acceptance Criteria" mentions only application, stability, usability and internationalization criteria. Technical criteria for accepting or disapproving a widget. What would happen for instance if a widget were technicallly correct bt Yahoo! does not consider the content interesting? Or even if the widget were interesting and technically correct, but there were already other approved widgets in the platform with similar content? My managers are concerned on starting a development project that could fianlize in disapproval of the final widgets.

Thanks a lot for your answers.

  • 1.) Business model for widgets is up to the individual widget authors. Some widgets may have subscription revenue, some may have content purchases (like Amazon Video on Demand), some may use advertising of various forms, and some may gain value from the additional expose the widget provides to their existing services (say Ebay / Facebook). Yahoo! does not dictate which you must use, this is up to what makes most sense for your content and intended audience.

2.) Yes, widgets are approved by both Yahoo! and the specific OEMs. We handle the coordination with the OEMs after it has passed Yahoo! QA.

3.) I can't speak authoritatively on this area, but I can say your concerns aren't an issue in general. We are very liberal about what we allow and similar widgets are definitely allowed (just look at the number of movie/video streaming widgets already). If you want to eliminate all concern, then email tvwidgets@yahoo-inc.com with details of your project and we would be happy to offer feedback on your specific plans.
