UN Location Codes

Are the developers of the WOEIDs aware of the UN Location codes? http://www.unece.org/cefact/locode/service/main.htm

Just curious as to whether there is any move to integrate them. The logisitics sector and especially Shipping use UN Location codes extensively. It would be superb if the WOEID model included the ability to query based on locode. The Locodes also have a "use" eg. Port, Rail Station, etc.

Thanks,

Damian.

  • We are indeed Damian -- we don't expose the concordance between WOEIDs and the UN IDs because thelatter match only a partial subset of our data. I can however see how a cross reference between our codes and others would be very helpful, so we'll keep this one on the books.

    Thanks,

Just to follow that up: in the UK "England and Wales" is often treated as one entity, for example for laws and statistics, and is included in ISO 3166-2 as GB-EAW (or UK-EAW) England and Wales. I think this is quite an unusual case but is there any chance of this being reflected in WOEIDs? Without it, I can't see a coherent (and non-hacky) way of doing some things i'm trying to do.

At the moment, SELECT * FROM geo.places WHERE text = "England and Wales" returns the town of Wales in South Yorkshire, England — which is lovely to know about but no damn use!

  • Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is unusual for an ISO 3166-2 code to be assigned to a collection of administrative areas. We will try to address this in a future release of GeoPlanet.
