Hello
We divide earth into continents, continents into regions and regions into countries. For example
Europe -> Northern Europe -> Denmark
We have all this records in GeoPlanet but parent is very strange.
Why is parent of Denmark -> Earth (woeid=1) and not Northern Europe?
Why is parent of Northern Europe -> Earth (woeid=1) and not Europe?
Of course Earth is parent, but why GeoPlanet isnt using more accurate parents?
Bye
GeoPlanet mainly uses administrative areas as parents. Administrative areas have one of the following place type codes:7 (Town), 8 (Admin1), 9 (Admin2), 10 (Admin3), 12 (Country), 22 (Neighborhood). Earth is a special parent. Any place that does not otherwise have an administrative area for a parent (like a country, continent, or supername) will have Earth as its parent. Earth is the only place without a parent. Other places that contain a place are called BelongTos. Northern Europe (supername) and Europe (continent) are BelongTos of Denmark, as are Scandinavia, European Union, and Eurasia (all supernames).
