Yahoo Widget support on LG LCD TV

AlanT24 Feb 2011 8:45 PM
Hi -

I have a 2009 LG LCD HDTV, 42LH50, that has Yahoo Widgets. I have only seen 13 widgets there for the last year. Is LG not supporting updates to Yahoo Widgets & Yahoo Widget firmware for this model??? It should be capable of running many other Widgets. The Widget Engine version is 5.3.1.

Thanx

LG needs to push an update to these TVs to allow other apps/Widgets to be available. We are actively working with LG on this.

It would be fantastic if that happened. I have tried on the LG side to address this, but I get misinformation from their 1st tier support people like "we not responsible for this", "we have not no control over this", "go talk to Yahoo", etc. Excuse me, this is your platform. I'm sure you don't let anyone just push updates w/o your approval.

Any specific time frame? Yahoo has stated this for a few months now.

We continue to work with and have discussions with all of our partners. At the end of the day, we cannot force anyone to upgrade the framework or firmware on their device; that is up to them.

It's a bit misleading to advertise numerous apps and TV partners when LG only allows access to a portion of the available apps.

From LG:

Any software upgrades for the Yahoo Widgets will come from Yahoo.

Another 3 months have gone by w/o any update. Is it that LG & Yahoo only care about this year's model???? With responses like this you are driving consumers to other solutions such as ROKU or Goggle TV. You will then not be able to charge premiums for "Internet-Enabled TVs" & consumers will buy "dumb" sets. I've had it with Yahoo & LG support.

Apologies for not responding to this earlier. This topic has been discussed several times in other forum posts. We can confirm that LG and Yahoo! have decided not to release any new Yahoo! TV Widgets on 2009 LG TVs. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. LG and Yahoo! are continuing to work together to release selected new TV Widgets to the 2010 LG TVs. We expect the next releases to be in late Q3, 2011.

I have an LG 42LE5400, date of manufacture: January, 2011, and I haven't seen any updates in a long time. What's up?

Well, I, as a consumer. have decided to NOT ever purchase another LG TV, or any other brand that has Yahoo widgets. It is pretty crappy to dump support for a model just because it's 2 years old!!!! That is not comsumer-friendly & not the way to build brand loyalty.
