Any progress on a commercial license or an app gallery ?

Dear Yahoo,

Without a way to generate revenue nor the opportunity to be featured on the Yahoo fantasy website, it is going to be very difficult for us developers to be successful with our apps...

Is there any reason to believe the situation could improve in 2011 ?

Thanks,
Alain

I can't get into specifics, but there is at least active work on it still ongoing. I think it's progress? But it's a bit above my paygrade. :D

I know that specific work is being done towards seeing if we can get commercial licenses -- we *want* to have an app gallery as well, but I don't think there are any active developments on that front right now.

Any updates on the commercial licenses front or what the process to obtain one might look like?

  • If the commercial license is being held up by yahoo having to pay to get the raw stats themselves (understandable) is there any way to get a commercial license for a subset of the data?

For instance if you pay MLB for the player stats then it makes sense that you may have some hoops to jump through before you can pass that data on to (our) 3rd party apps but in the meantime I'm sure a lot of cool apps could be created that simply use team fantasy numbers. While you may not be able to provide how many runs Joe Mauer had on april 12th maybe you can make available the number of fantasy points a team in your league has.

That information alone would be really valuable to developers looking to build a fantasy application, or integrate a little fantasy data into a website. That would at least help devs make a case for creating an app until you finally figure out how to charge for the actual MLB stats.

    Thanks,
    Brent

  • Just to clarify what I was proposing:

I'd like to be able to charge for an application that has access to certain fantasy-only stats, and would be interested in paying for this ability if it also removed/increased the request cap.

I'm not sure if this restriction (fantasy team only stats) would make the commercial license easier to offer on your end, but if it does that would be a great step in the right direction.

    Thanks Again,
    Brent

  • Yep, it's definitely a great suggestion and one that I've already passed up through the chain. I believe we're still optimistic about getting a full commercial license with stats and all, which is why that's the direction that our lawyers are focusing on, but if that falls through, then I will definitely strongly advocate having a commercial license that only exposes a subset of non-stats related information. The main issue, I'd say, is that fantasy stats themselves are certainly a grey area from the perspective that they're built up from stats that we license from a provider, and therefore might be seen as derivative and still covered by whatever contracts we have there. But stuff like your league structure, which teams you own, which games you play, etc -- that's all ours.

  • Thanks Sean, I appreciate the update.
