Today we've rolled out new commercial terms for developers who use the Yahoo! Updates API or Updates Firehose API. Now you can build monetizable applications with access to social data created by our global audience of 600+ million users. Until today, Yahoo!'s social data and user activity streams accessed via the Yahoo! Updates API or Updates Firehose API have only been available to developers on a non-commercial basis. With this announcement, developers can use social data for commercial purposes as long as usage complies with all terms and conditions.
To ensure that developers have the data they need to build successful applications, we are increasing rate limits for social data. Use of the Updates API or Updates Firehose API in volumes that exceed this posted rate limit still requires a separate agreement with Yahoo!.
- Per application limit (identified by your Consumer Key): 100,000 calls per day
- Per IP: 10,000 calls per hour
The Updates API and Updates Firehose API are part of Yahoo!s suite of social APIs that give developers and publishers access to user-authorized Yahoo! social data. Updates data includes comments, movie ratings, Flickr uploads, and other user-generated actions that can be pulled into applications both on and off the Yahoo! network. Developers have been able to create new apps and experiences using Yahoo! social data for a while, but now this work can be monetized. For instance, Echo plans to integrate Updates' activity streams into their recently announced Echo River widget to display relevant, real-time responses to news stories.
To help safeguard privacy, users have control over whether or not to make their social activity data public and whether to share their data with developers. Developers are required to give users a mechanism to request deletion of data that is stored for more than 24 hours. More information about our user data policy for developers is available in our FAQ and Guidelines.
The launch of commercial terms for the Updates API and Updates Firehose API is the next step in our ongoing commitment to make Yahoo! the platform of choice for third-party developers and publishers. Over time, we expect to announce commercial terms for many more APIs and implement more data access via YQL, eliminating the need to call multiple APIs.
With some of the most popular web services and development tools on the Web, and with the scalability and reliability of YQL at your service, Yahoo!s rich offering provides a potent platform for innovation. Adding commercial terms will further enable Yahoo!s growing developer and publisher ecosystem.
