The SoCal WIT chapter kicked off a new year of events on January 26 with the WIT Winter Bash 2012, a multi-media event with wine, cheese, sweets, a look back at last year's events and a look forward at what's coming up this year.
Co-Presidents Natalia Vinnick and Michelle Ghoukasian gave a slideshow overview of the many events hosted by SoCal WIT last year, including Career Week, Let's Do Lunch events, the first organized Hackday co-location event in Burbank, and the Poised for Leadership workshop. WIT committee members also introduced themselves via recorded video.
Yolanda Person-Collins, our K-12 Program coordinator, introduced Brittany Vaughan, Director of Operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley, to talk about the upcoming email mentorship program. Email mentorship is a first for both SoCal WIT and local Boys & Girls Club chapter. Participating Yahoo!s will be matched up with local children and will email them once a week to guide and encourage them in their goals. By the end of the Bash, almost 20 people had signed up, men and women, to commit to the program, which runs from February to May.
After the presentations, guests had plenty of time to chow down on a variety of treats (the cake pops were my personal favorite) while chatting and hunting down answers to the quiz raffle, which featured questions about WIT's activities. The Winter Bash turned out to be an energetic start to the year.
